The Chairperson of the SADC Committee of Senior Officials from the Ministries of Health, HIV and AIDS, Dr Zainab Chaula who is the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children of the United Republic of Tanzania today opened the meeting of the Committee in Dar es Salaam, ahead of the meeting of SADC Ministers of Health, HIV and AIDS scheduled for 7th November, 2019.
The meeting is being attended by Angola, Botswana, Union of Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The SADC Secretariat was led by Dr Willy Amisi, the Senior Programme Officer for Health and Nutrition
In her opening remarks, Dr Zainab Chaula hailed the remarkable progress that the SADC region has made in reducing Tuberculosis, HIV and Malaria, while calling for more efforts to drive the SADC region into a disease-free region.
She attributed the progress in the fight against communicable diseases to the enormous support from the SADC Heads of State and Government, Ministers of Health and Ministers responsible for HIV and AIDS, International Cooperating Partners, researchers, Private Sector and communities.
The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency Honourable Samia Suluhu Hassan will preside over the official opening of the Ministers meeting. In attendance will be the SADC Executive Secretary Her Excellency Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax and Hon. Ummy Mwalimu, Minister of Health of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Chairperson of the Committee of SADC Ministers of Health and Ministers Responsible for HIV and AIDS.
Among the key activities, the Ministers will on 8th November, 2019 launch Zero Malaria Starts With Me campaign as part of the commemoration of the 2019 SADC Malaria Day whose main activities are scheduled to take place at Kibaha, about 35 kilometres outside Dar es Salaam.
