The extraordinary meeting of the SADC Council of Ministers meeting that was held in Lilongwe, Malawi from October 22 – 24, 2013 has appointed Dr Thembinkosi Mhlongo as the new SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Regional Integration (DES-RI). A national of South Africa Dr Mhlongo succeeded Eng. Joao Samuel Caholo who has served in that position until the expiration of his contract on September 16, 2013.
However, Dr Mholongo might be new to the DES-RI position, but he is not entirely new to SADC as he served at the Secretariat in the early to mid - 2000s as
the SADC Chief Director, the position that was abolished in favour of the two Deputy Executive Secretary positions.
