His Excellency, Mr. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, President of the Republic of Mozambique, and outgoing Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation visited the SADC Headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana on 26th April 2017.
The President, who was on a three-day State visit to the Republic of Botswana, was received to the SADC Headquarters by the SADC Management led by the SADC Executive Secretary, Her Excellency, Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax.
In welcoming President Nyusi, Dr. Tax said that the SADC Secretariat was humbled by his visit to the SADC Headquarters. She highlighted progress made by SADC in, among others, increased intra-regional trade, cross-border infrastructure programmes, and consolidation of democracy, peace and political stability. The Executive Secretary also commended H.E. President Nyusi and his Government for the efforts and achievements in addressing economic and political challenges in the Republic of Mozambique, particularly in the ongoing political dialogue.
President Nyusi received briefings on Politics, Peace and Security Cooperation, focusing on the SADC Regional Early Warning Centre (REWC), and on the status of Economic Integration. He visited the Regional Early Warning Centre (REWC, which was officially launched in 2010 by His Excellency Armando Emilio Guebuza, the then President of the Republic of Mozambique and Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation. The REWC monitors the political, security, social and economic threats based on the approved insecurity and conflict indicators.
President Nyusi commended the Executive Secretary and her team for their professionalism, diligence and efforts in facilitating the implementation of the SADC programmes and the regional integration agenda. He pledged to work with the Secretariat in order to make regional Integration a success, and to encourage all Member States to fully subscribe to the Regional Early Warning Centre.
His Excellency, President Nyusi was accompanied by a 16-member delegation comprising Ministers, Deputies Ministers and Parliamentarians.
