SADC Executive Secretary attends 2025 IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C. to bolster global partnerships

The Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), His Excellency Mr. Elias M. Magosi, is engaging global partners during his participation in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C., USA, from 21 to 26 April 2025.

The SADC Executive Secretary’s presence at this global platform—where pressing development issues are discussed—underscores SADC’s commitment to fostering international cooperation and strategic engagement. 

High-Level Meetings with Global Stakeholders

During his visit, the SADC Executive Secretary will hold discussions with prominent officials, including:
•    Dr. Victoria Kwakwa, World Bank Vice President for Eastern and Southern Africa,
•    Mr. Zarau Kibwe, Executive Director of the World Bank Africa Group 1 Constituency,
•    Mr. Jason Grubb, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southern Africa at the U.S. Department of State,
•    Amb. Aldona Wos, President of the Institute of World Politics, and
•    SADC Ambassadors and High Commissioners based in Washington, D.C.

These engagements aim to strengthen partnerships, mobilise resources, and advance SADC’s regional development agenda in line with the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP 2020-2030) and Vision 2050.

Mobilising Support for Transformative Regional Projects

The SADC region is actively seeking investment and resources for its high-impact and transformative regional projects, with an estimated cost of US$ 625 billion. These projects focus on key priority areas, including:
•    Peace, Security, and Good Governance
•    Industrial Development and Market Integration
•    Infrastructure Development in Support of Regional Integration
•    Social and Human Capital Development
•    Cross-Cutting Themes, such as Gender, Youth, Environment and Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management

Side Event on Sustainable Infrastructure Financing

As part of his visit, the SADC Secretariat will host a dedicated side event on 24 April 2025, focused on advancing Sustainable Infrastructure Financing Across SADC. The event aims to:
•    Foster regional collaboration in sustainable infrastructure development
•    Connect with industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators driving infrastructure growth across the region
•    Explore innovative financing solutions for infrastructure projects
•    Showcase investment opportunities in Energy, ICT, Transport, and Water sectors

This event serves as a crucial platform for unlocking the potential of sustainable infrastructure investment within the SADC region.
