The second edition of the publication, Mozambique SADC Success Stories, was launched by His Excellency Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, the President of the Republic of Mozambique and Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), at the SADC Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government on 23rd June 2021 in Maputo, Mozambique.
The publication was produced with the support of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH-Strengthening National Regional Linkages (GIZ-SNRL) Programme, a partnership programme between SADC, the European Union and Germany. The publication which is available in English and Portuguese was produced to raise awareness of the benefits of SADC and its successes in Mozambique.
Mozambique continues to play a significant role and has been recognised for the importance of its transport corridors which radiate out from the main ports of Maputo, Beira and Nacala, providing access to international markets for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Mozambique SADC Success Stories Volume Two features the record-breaking Maputo-Katembe suspension bridge, which opens up trade, and the world-class Zimpeto Stadium, which stimulates tourism, sport and culture.
Gender issues come to the fore as the publication reports on the progress towards ending child marriages and changing lives by shaping a better future for the young generation through a number of inspiring and transformational initiatives.
Mozambique also has a key role to play in sustaining energy resources and managing water security. The publication covers the story of the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers, two of Africa’s major rivers which flow through Mozambique to the Indian Ocean. With a focus on overcoming the water shortage challenge, the local villagers living in the vicinity of the purpose built Moamba Major Dam, are allowed increased, regular and continuous water withdrawals.
Food security goes under the microscope along with a unique seed bank that is enabling better lives. This publication also reflects on tuberculosis in mines, and the health solutions that are “settling a century of gold dust”.
This publication demonstrates the importance of Mozambique’s contribution to the attainment of sustainable economic development to the SADC Region and beyond.
