On 6th April 2016, the SADC Secretariat staff in the Directorate of Infrastructure and Services undertook a study tour of the multi-national Kazungula Bridge Project (KBP) which is being implemented by the governments of Botswana and Zambia.
The tour was part of the activities for the Directorates’ annual review and planning workshop for 2016 whose theme was Towards SADC Infrastructure Vision 2027.
During the tour, the SADC staff noted the progress of works so far done, which included completion of the Zambian portion of the temporal bridge to facilitate for the construction of a permanent one.
The KBP is part of a corridor-long infrastructure improvement programme on the north-south transport corridor at Kazungula crossing, a vital trade route serving major trade-dependent economies within SADC, such as Botswana and Zambia.
The scope of the KBP include construction of a new bridge linking Botswana and Zambia over the Zambezi River, two one-stop-border-post facilities (OSBP) and access roads at the Kazungula borders.
The KBP is co-funded by the African Development Bank, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with contributions from both the governments of Botswana and Zambia. The KBP is expected to be completed in December 2018.
