A Peace and Security Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Region that accommodates the concerns of all stakeholders towards the restoration of peace in the eastern part of the country is now in place. It was signed on February 24, 2013 by the DRC, its neighbours in the Economic Community of the Great Lakes Countries (CEPGL), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) with the United Nations and the African Union as its guarantors.
The Framework afforded opportunities to all stakeholders to commit themselves to attaining lasting peace in the DRC: In this regard, the DRC Government committed, amongst others, to continue deepening security sector reforms, especially the army.
DRC’s neighbouring countries committed, amongst others, not to interfere in the internal affairs of that country, neither to tolerate, support nor assist any kind of armed groups, but to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of their neighbours and to strengthen regional cooperation.
The UN committed to, amongst others, undertake a strategic review of the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) its peacekeeping force in DRC, to better help the country’s government address security challenges.
