The Chairperson of the SADC Oversight Committee on Lesotho, Retired Justice Frederick Werema met the SADC Executive Secretary Her Excellency Dr. Stergomena Lawrence on 7th December 2016 in Gaborone Botswana. The objective of the meeting was to brief the SADC Executive Secretary following the first deployment meeting of the SADC Oversight Committee to Lesotho, which took place from 18th to 26th November 2016. The Chairperson of the SADC Oversight Committee was accompanied by Honourable Patrick Balopi, former Member of Parliament for Botswana.
The deployment of the SADC Oversight Committee follows the SADC Summit decision to deploy the Oversight Committee to serve as an early warning mechanism, and lend assistance to the implementation of the Constitutional and Security Sector Reforms, in Lesotho.
During the meeting, the Chairperson highlighted a number of developments that have taken place in Lesotho following the SADC Summit Decisions, including the state of preparedness of both Government and Opposition Parties in Lesotho to ensure the successful conclusion of the Constitutional and Security Sector Reforms.
The Executive Secretary and the Chairperson of the SADC Oversight Committee noted the need to continue encouraging the Government, Opposition Parties and other Stakeholders in Lesotho to continue with the dialogue and ensure inclusivity in order to guarantee the effective implementation of the Roadmap towards Constitutional and Security Sector Reforms, and ensure stability and durable peace and security in the country.
