SADC Executive Secretary Dr. Tomaz Augusto Salomão, and the German Ambassador to Botswana & SADC, H.E Mrs Annett Günther, signed, on April 10, 2013, four agreements formalising support from the Federal Republic of Germany to the SADC Region. The agreements, totalling €44.2 million, cover commitments made in 2010 and 2011 under SADC-Germany Cooperation on the agreed focal areas of cooperation which include:
- Transboundary water management
- Transboundary management and protection of natural resources and
- Regional economic cooperation.
Further to the focal areas of cooperation, support will also be provided to two programmes, that is, peace, security and good governance in the SADC region as well as support to strengthen the reform agenda and management capacity of SADC institutions. The objective of the German-SADC development cooperation is to contribute to peace and security and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in the SADC region by supporting the regional integration agenda.
Dr Salomão thanked the Federal Republic of Germany for its long on-going and critical support to SADC, adding that Germany support to the SADC region has remained relevant over the years and is aligned to the priorities of the SADC Common Agenda. It was agreed that the next SADC-Germany bilateral negotiations will take place in Germany, in July 2013.
