The Italian Ambassador to Botswana and SADC His Excellency Dr. Fillipo Scammacca del Murgo e dell’Agnone Presents His Papers of Credence to Her Excellency Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax

His Excellency Dr. Fillipo Scammacca del Murgo e dell’Agnone presented his papers of Credence to Her Excellency Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax on 16th November 2016 in Gaborone, Botswana.  In his introduction, the Italian Ambassador highlighted the Italian Government’s commitment to strengthen relations with Africa and the SADC Region.

During the meeting, the two parties discussed a number of issues of mutual importance. Among the issues was the need to effectively deal with the challenges of climate change, food security and migration. The Ambassador emphasized that the migrant crisis has affected Italy and Europe as a whole. Among other things, the two noted the need for the parties to collaborate in adopting measures to address the social and economic related challenges with a view to reduce poverty and improve the lives of people across the African region which would ultimately address issues of peace and security and migration. They noted that this requires programmatic approaches, among them the need for creating conducive environments for investment. The two parties agreed to continue to actively work together in the areas of market integration and industrialisation, peace and security, infrastructure development and climate change in a bid to address the socio-economic challenges and curtail the problem of large scale human migration.

The Executive Secretary appealed to the Italian Ambassador to encourage the Italian Government and the EU to support the implementation of the Global Political Agreement for the Organisation of Peaceful, Credible and Transparent Elections in the DRC including contributing to efforts towards a credible and peaceful electoral process.

The parties agreed to expedite the finalisation of the Memorandum of Understanding to reinforce the relations between the two entities.
