Lesotho Minister of Foreign Affairs Meets the SADC Executive Secretary

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations of the Kingdom of Lesotho, Honourable Lesego Makgothi met the Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Her Excellency Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax, on 28th June 2019, to discuss political developments in the country.

Hon. Makgothi assured the SADC Executive Secretary that the Kingdom of Lesotho continues to make steady progress in the implementation of reforms and greatly appreciate SADC's support. The Minister further expressed gratitude to SADC for continued commitment in ensuring that lasting peace, and stability is maintained in the Kingdom and in SADC region as a whole.

The SADC Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Tax expressed gratitude to the Minister for making time to visit the Secretariat. She commended the Kingdom of Lesotho for convening the Multi- National Stakeholder Dialogue in November 2018, which brought together leaders of government, opposition political parties, representatives of religious institutions, civil society and security agencies, where stakeholders committed to participate in an inclusive, participatory, democratic, transparent and comprehensive reforms process.

The meeting noted the milestones achieved following the deployment of the SADC Facilitator to the Kingdom of Lesotho, Oversight Committee to the Kingdom of Lesotho, and the SADC Preventitive Mission in the Kingdom of Lesotho (SAPMIL). The Executive Secretary of SADC assured the Honourable Minister of SADC's contuned support, and encouraged the Kingdom of Lesotho to sustain the recorded achievements, with a view to ensuring sustained political stability and peace and security in the Kingdom.

The meeting further agreed that an update on political developments in the Kingdom of Lesotho will be provided to the Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation at its meeting scheduled from 18 – 19 July 2019, in Lusaka Zambia.
