SADC Ministers responsible for Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), Transport and Meteorology met on 21st October in Matsapha, Swaziland to review progress on the implementation of programme and projects of regional importance in the three sectors.
The Meeting held under the theme:“Transport and ICT Infrastructure in support on Industrialisation - Enriching Nation and Enhancing integration” was officially opened by Swaziland’s Prime Ministers Hon. Sibusiso Dlamini who was represented by the Acting Prime Minister Hon. Princess Tsandile.
In a speech read on his behalf by Hon. Princess Tsandile who is the Minister of Home Affairs, Minister Dlamini highlighted that the ICTs, Transport and Meteorology sectors have an important role in driving regional integration and economic development in the SADC region.
“It is important that we invest in developing infrastructures in the ICTs, Transport and Meteorology sectors to accelerate our drive towards industrialisation”, Minister Dlamini noted.
Speaking on behalf of the SADC Secretariat, the Director of Infrastructure and Services Directorate, Mr Remigious Makumbe said that infrastructure was the landing pad for socio-economic development, and that “if the region is to make SADC a better place for its citizens, the roll out of infrastructure development is more urgent than ever before”.
Ministers reviewed progress made with the implementation of Ministerial Decisions; policy and regulatory frameworks within the three sectors; and in the implementation of the transport chapter of the Infrastructure Master Plan as well as the SADC Digital 2027 plan.

Sub-regional organisations, corridor institutions, ICT regulatory institutions, and SADC partners such as Communications Regulators Association of Southern Africa (CRASA), Southern Africa Telecommunications Association (SATA), Southern Africa Postal Operators Association (SAPOA), Meteorology Association of Southern Africa (MASA), New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Coordinating Agency, and NEPAD Business Foundation also attended the meeting.
The meeting was preceded by preparatory meetings of Senior Officials in the three Sectors and a high level investment conference focusing on ICT Investment, and Transport investment in support of small economies and the oceanic state from 17 – 20th October 2016.
