SADC Congratulates President Mutharika

SADC Executive Secretary Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax has congratulated H.E. Professor Peter Mutharika on his election as Malawi’s fifth Republican President. Dr. Tax also congratulated H.E. President Mutharika for assuming the Chairpersonship of SADC.

President Mutharika was sworn into office yesterday after the Malawi Electoral Commission declared him the winner of the presidential elections.

“We, in the SADC family, are happy to note that the people of the Republic of Malawi were accorded an opportunity to elect their leaders to consolidate democracy and political stability in Malawi.  I wish, therefore, to commend the people of Malawi for the high levels of political accommodation, tolerance and maturity shown during the entire process. I also wish to commend the Malawi Electoral Commission for ensuring the holding of peaceful elections”, said Dr. Tax.

She furthermore expressed the hope that the spirit of co-operation and political tolerance demonstrated by all political parties during the elections will continue to manifest itself in the post-election phase as part of re-energizing the momentum for nation building.

Dr. Tax also commended Former President Joyce Banda for her diligence, wisdom and statesmanship demonstrated during her tenure as President of the Republic of Malawi and as Chairperson of SADC.

The SADC Executive Secretary said “I also wish to congratulate you on the manner in which you graciously conceded defeat in the just ended elections – which is a clear testimony of your commitment to the principles of democracy and the rule of law”.

It is expected that President Mutharika will be inaugurated tomorrow as fifth President of the Republic of Malawi.
