The SADC Executive Secretary, Her Excellency, Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax met with the Director General for Directorate of Intelligence and Security for Botswana, Brigadier (Rtd.) Peter Magosi on 25th June 2018, at the SADC Secretariat in Gaborone, Botswana, to exchange views on matters of Intelligence and Security Services in the SADC Region.
Brigadier Magosi thanked the SADC Executive Secretary for availing time to meet and share insights on issues of Intelligence and Security Services in the Region. He said that since his appointment to the portfolio of Intelligence and Security in May 2018, he has been on missions to meet his counterparts within the SADC Member States to share, dialogue, and foster collaboration between security organs. He highlighted that sharing of information on security matters was very important in addressing global security challenges. He informed the SADC Executive Secretary that his Government was eager to offer support to regional initiatives geared towards the advancement of the region’s peace and security agenda.
Her Excellency, Dr. Tax congratulated the Director General for his appointment and welcomed him to the SADC Secretariat. She thanked the Government of Botswana for the continued support to the SADC Secretariat and assured the Director General of the Secretariat’s support and cooperation with the Government of Botswana on matters of intelligence and security for the benefit of the region. She commended the Government of Botswana for the good relationship with Secretariat that results in exchange of information such as through the SADC Regional Early Warning Center, and emphasized the critical role of early warning information in achieving the objectives of promotion and enhancement of peace and security in the region, while addressing issues of cyber-crime and terrorism.
The Director General also took a tour of the SADC Regional Early Warning Center, whose objective is to strengthen the SADC mechanisms for conflict prevention, management and resolution, in line with the provisions of the Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation. The Centre derives its mandate from the Strategic Indicative Plan of the Organ (SIPO) on Peace, Security and Defence.
The Director General was accompanied by Mr. Ramahobo, Staff Officer at the Botswana Directorate on Intelligence and Security Services, while the SADC Executive Secretary was accompanied by Mr. Habib Kambanga, Head of the SADC Regional Early Warning Centre.
