The SADC Executive Secretary, Her Excellency, Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax met the Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Committee of Intelligence and Security Services of Africa (CISSA), Mr. Shimeles W. Semayat on the 25th of June 2018, in Gaborone, Botswana. The two parties reaffirmed their commitment to the continued collaboration.
Mr. Semayat thanked Dr. Tax for according him the opportunity to visit the SADC Secretariat. He applauded SADC for the commendable work that the SADC Regional Early Warning was undertaking in providing early warning briefs that are critical for ensuring durable peace and security in the region, and which are also beneficial for other continental stakeholders including CISSA. He informed the SADC Executive Secretary that he had fruitful meetings at the technical level which finalised the review of the Joint Action Plan and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SADC and CISSA signed in 2012.
Dr. Tax welcomed Mr. Semayat to SADC and thanked CISSA for the continued cordial relations that existed between the two institutions. Dr. Tax said that the visit was essential for CISSA to understand the operations of the SADC Secretariat. Dr Tax commended the technical teams from both parties for the work towards finalisation of the revised joint Action Plan and MoU between SADC and CISSA, and assured Mr. Semayat that SADC was committed to the continued collaboration.
The two parties agreed to finalise and sign the revised MoU that takes into consideration new and emerging issues, and to continue to work together in ensuring peace and security of the people of SADC region and the continent.
The Mr. Semayat was accompanied by Dr. Mokete Pherudi, Head of Early Warning Unit and Mr. John Ngarambe, Principal Liaison Officer at CISSA, while the SADC Executive Secretary was accompanied by Mr. Habib Kambanga, Head of the SADC Regional Early Warning Centre.
