SADC Statement on the Appointment of his Excellency Ntsay Christian as Prime Minister of the Republic of Madagascar

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) wishes to congratulate the people of the Republic of Madagascar, and His Excellency Ntsay Christian on his appointment on 5th June 2018, as Prime Minister of the Republic of Madagascar following the decision of the High Constitutional Court of 25 May 2018.

SADC applauds the statesmanship demonstrated by the His Excellency Olivier Mahafaly Solonandrasana, the Former Prime Minister of Madagascar, and his Government for putting the interests of the people of Madagascar first and pave the way for the appointment of a new Prime Minister and a consensus Government.

SADC also commends the Special Envoy of SADC H.E Joaquim Chissano, for the continued excellent facilitation role in Madagascar, and recognizes and applauds efforts by the Special Envoys of the African Union, Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, and of the Special Envoy of the United Nations, Prof. Abdoulaye Bathily.

SADC urges all stakeholders in Madagascar to remain calm, and to call off street protests, in order to afford the Government an opportunity to appoint a consensus cabinet and facilitate a conducive environment for the preparation and conduct of credible and inclusive elections.

SADC assures the people of Madagascar of its unwavering support to the people and the Government of Madagascar as the country prepares for the forthcoming national general elections.
