Statement by His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana, and the Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation on the Outcome of Elections in the Republic of Seychelles

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) commends the people of the Republic of Seychelles for turning out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right by voting in the Presidential and National Assembly Elections, held on 22nd – 24th October 2020.

SADC congratulates the new President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan, and his political party Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS), for their electoral victory.

SADC also wishes to commend the people of the Republic of Seychelles for the peaceful and exemplary manner in which they have conducted themselves during the election campaign, polling, and counting periods. This is a reflection of the political maturity of the country.

I urge all candidates who contested in the 2020 Presidential and National Assembly Elections in the Republic of Seychelles, to encourage their supporters to peacefully accept the official results of the election as publicised by the Electoral Commission of Seychelles (ECS), and to observe the provisions of the Constitutional and Electoral Act of Seychelles should they have any grievances regarding the electoral process.

On behalf of SADC, and indeed on my own behalf, I wish to take this opportunity to commend the outgoing President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. Danny Faure, for his commitment to democratic principles and the SADC integration agenda.

I congratulate the Electoral Commission of Seychelles for successfully managing the 2020 Presidential and National Assembly Elections. I wish the incoming Government a peaceful and successful term of office.

Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi,

President of the Republic of Botswana, and the Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation
